My Uber Driver Got in an Accident. Should I Be Worried?

When we get into a rideshare vehicle, we never expect to get into an accident. Quite the opposite; in most situations, we choose to travel in an Uber or Lyft because we think it will be safer than driving after a night out or heading into an abandoned subway station after dark.

However, Uber drivers are just like any other driver, and typically don’t have much professional driving experience. Accidents are bound to happen and when they do, make sure you understand your rights as a rideshare passenger.

What to Know if Your Uber Driver Gets in an Accident

If you’re in an Uber and your driver gets into an accident, don’t panic. In virtually all situations, you’ll be covered under either the at-fault driver’s personal insurance policy or under Uber’s insurance policy for their drivers.

The particulars depend on the nature of the accident. The following are two common scenarios you should understand as a frequent rideshare passenger:

  • If the other driver (not your Uber driver) was responsible for the accident, it’s likely their personal insurance would cover the damages. If the other driver’s insurance policy is not sufficient, Uber’s uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury insurance will kick in.

  • If your Uber driver was responsible for the accident, Uber covers $1,000,000 third-party liability and the same uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury policy. Uber also provides contingent comprehensive and collision coverage for the Uber driver’s vehicle (as long as the Uber driver has comprehensive and collision coverage under their own policy and after they pay a $1,000 deductible).
